Exposed Septic Drain Line freezes in winter
Author: obrienclan (NC)

Hello All
I have had several people to take a look at our
Issue with our septic drain. The line goes from our pump
Station down a hill 20’ then it is exposed 110” and crosses
An intermittent creek. It’s a 2” pvc wrapped in ductal iron pipe and concreted
To the rock bed of our creek. From ther it goes up about 100’
To our drain field. The issues is whenevenr the weather gets in the teens in Peidmont North Carolina
The pipe freezes and eventually burns the pump motor

Any good suggestions on insulating this?

About 2-3 feet of dirt and a smaller hole to allow the pipe to drain after pump shuts off kinda like a sump pump

A pipe that long would need an "air inlet" device at the top end to allow it to drain, and MIGHT refill the pit so the pump restarts, or fill it enough so it would short cycle with just a minor usage.
