Wiring a sump pump high level alarm to an alarm box
Author: lwmoreau (LA)

I need to wire a sump pump high level alarm to an alarm box. The switch has a black (hot), a white (neutral) and also a red wire. I know where to wire the black and white wires in the alarm box from the high level alarm in the sump chamber, but there is no place for the red wire...Anyone know what to do with the red wire ?

I don't know if the switch is feeding the alarm box, or vice versa, because the wiring would be different for the two methods. Usually, a switch might have a black wire going to it and the red one going back to activate the alarm, but in that case there would not be any need for a neutral, in the switch. If the feed is through the switch, then those two wires are the same, but the neutral would feed through to the relay. A wiring diagram of the two devices would be a big help.

The alarm box feeds power to the switch. I have the black (hot) and white (neutral) connected from the switch to the connections in the box...The only thing confusing me is the red wire coming into the alarm box from the switch. There is no place to connect it inside the alarm box...

The switch is a Levelguard Model # Z2480AA1Z .. The alarm box is an Observer 500 series .. The switch has to be hard wired to the alarm box...

The Observer is designed to be used as a stand-alone alarm. You strap it's float at the level you determine to be too high, then plug it in. The Levelguard is a replacement for your pumps existing float switch, if it should prove unreliable. It has two functions.."ON" and"OFF". You strap it to the piping in the sump. Plug it in, and plug your pump into it. There is no real wiring or re-wiring involved with getting the results you desire.

I understand the placement of the alarm and sending unit. I just need to know what to do with the red wire that is on the overfill sensor power cord. In the alarm box, there is a connection place for the black (hot) and the white (neutral), but there is no place to connect the red wire. I do not have a plug in for the Levelguard, just black, white and red...

The black and white are the hot and neutral providing power to the switch(it's solid state and requires a neutral conductor) and the red is the switch leg that provides a hot wire for the pump/alarm.
