 Electrical bonding of gas pipes
Author: Palm329 (VA)

I know this might be more of an electrical question than a plumbing.

Do you all normally see the pipes in a home bonded with the homes electrical system ground? Usually this is a bare copper wire clamped to the cold water pipe. Sometimes the black iron natural gas pipes are also bonded. Now, I believe it’s a requirement for CSST flex gas pipes, otherwise they can develop pinhole leaks or something.

Anyway, just curious if bonding to the gas pipes is something you see/do regularly, as my 1950’s home has no bonding to the gas pipes.

It has been a requirement for a long time. Ideally, the connection is made to a ground rod or to the water service where it enters the building to minimize possible disruptions by replacing sections of metal pipe with plastic or installing dielectric isolating unions.
