My 60 year old basement floor drain is connected to storm sewer/sump pit. There is stagnant black water inside the drain that at times I can smell. Im sure its not connected to the sanitary sewer because the floor drain and sump pit is lower than where the sanitary sewer exits the house.

Im not sure if I should rent or buy a large pump and suck it all out or if this is a sign that the drain piping is compromised.


I can put a hose down the drain in center of room and it would take some time before seeing a trickle in a sump pit about 10' away. However, during heavy rain/wet spells the sump pit collects waters frequently and flows very well. Both the sump pit and trap in floor drain (I think its a trap, I see water) are clear water.... its only after I start pumping water out of the floor drain with a shop vac do I see black water.

Is it normal for a storm sewer/or French drain to collect water?
