Water filter system busted meter and leak
Author: Tmcgarvey (PA)

Hello,

I moved into my house about 9 months ago. A few months back I took notice of this busted looking meter in my basement closet at the front of my house.
I wish I could attach the image from my phone, but I do have them to email if anybody can help. It is a meter connected to the main water valve for the house that then runs through a filtration tube. It looks like it quite literally busted or exploded from the inside. The shell is still in tact but the face of the meter is filled with gunk.

It was not mentioned in the inspection report, and I cannot recall if it was this way during the walk through but I assume not.

I noticed today that some of the things on the shelf beneath the pipes were wet. Not soaked, just damp. The pipe that is beneath the busted meter has rust stains on it. The bottom of it was also wet.

Upon close inspection, I noticed that the pipe is NOT rusted where the two pipes fuse, so I do not believe that this pipe is the source of the leak.

From my observations, here’s what I think may be happening:

There is a very slow water leak coming from the busted meter that is possibly backed up from the water filter tube. This leak is dripping onto the pipe below it, causing it to rust. The pipe then drips onto the shelf below it. Talking like 4-5 drops per day.

Does anybody know anything about these meters exploding from backed up water? Is it necessary to replace or repair? Any ideas on if a caulk or sealant could be used to stop the dripping? Again, I have pictures for those that want them! They are very helpful. I couldn’t figure out how to turn them into links for the post.

Thank you so much for your time.

Taylor

call your water company. The meter belongs to them.
