 Kohler Shower Valve revisited
Author: srloren (CA)

Reconstructed earlier question for clarity, please if you have any thoughts on this, give me a little help.

I have what I believe to be a Kohler K-304 KS Shower Valve and need to replace the cartridge. I have replaced the cartridge and now when I turn on the water at the main valve and then turn on the shower valve I get a spurt of water at first but then I dies down to a dribble. I have checked the shower head for debris but it is clear. The problem is in the valve itself. I know this because on the opposite wall in the shower there is the same Kohler shower valve installed.

1. Does part #500520 (the black Plastic Mixing portion of the valve) that can be installed 180 degrees one way or the other. In other words it appears that it makes no difference how you install it, it should work?
2. Kohler sent the part #500520 with O-Rings and after installing it and replacing part #77759 (the group of components that make up the Stem Assembly), I turn on the shower valve I get a spurt of water at first but then I dies down to a dribble.
3. Kohler is sending me more parts soon after speaking to the Customer Service. Photos of the valve and trim below:

The stem is just a "stupid" disc with openings that let water through depending on how the disc is turned. The black PBU can be installed either way, but if it is defective it will allow either hot or cold water through but CANNOT shut off both of them. Therefore, you seem to have an anomaly that we cannot diagnose without being there. BUT, I have had that valve get blocked by mineral buildup IF it is just used for a shower and the lower opening (for a tub spout) is plugged off, because that is where the stoppage occurs. IT is why I usually install shower only valves upside down if the trim allows it.
