This is an odd stub out for a shower arm. Anyone know what this is and how to remove it?
The customer would like a new shower arm and shower head installed.

Most of the time a allen wrench will fit in the end of the adapter sticking out of the wall so you can tighten/loosen it etc.

First, make sure it is threaded on before twisting.

Yes I worry about twisting pipe in walls always.

So the adapter needs gone and the existing stub out so I can install new chrome shower arm. I am assuming there's 1/2" fitting of some type in the wall.

I would guess that was a vandal proof head screwed to the wall and this is a rubber insert that sealed to the inside. It is probably just screwed on to a regular 1/2" nipple.

Yes indeed. Job is complete. It was a brass adapter threaded onto a 1/2" x 3" galv nipple:

sum, typical for a steel nipple being used in a domestic water situation. especially when the steel meets brass.

Probably a bit late now for the large trim ring...but Yes you are right would have been a good idea to cover the holes in the tile. They just bought the home and want to remodel the entire bathroom.
