We are in the process of renovating two bathrooms in a condo building, and relaxing the old bathtub/shower combos with Kohler Rely acrylic shower bases. The tile was removed, leaving the concrete floors and studs. We are not living there during the renovation, but I do not think the workers installed any type of water barrier before setting the acrylic shower pans in place. Should there be a liner or other type of water barrier under the new shower bases?

No, because here would NOT be any way they could seal it to the drain, which is a requirement for a water barrier.

Thank you for your response. I have a follow up question, please. What is the best protection method if a water barrier is not appropriate? What if the acrylic shower pan should crack in the future?

Being that your pan is the moisture/water barrier, you should notice from the topside if a crack is developing and then you stop using that shower until the pan is repaired/replaced.

That would normally indicate that the shower base was NOT installed properly, and would not be used even if a barrier had been installed.

it is very important that something was put under the shower base to keep it from cracking in the future.
mortar, plaster or minimal expanding foam are a few things that can be used.
also, it appears as if you have a 3/4 inch shower valve that the plumber used 1/2 inch pipe to supply.
if you plan on using both outlets at the same time, you will not be happy with the volume of water.
put larger size pipe NOW while the walls are open. you paid more money for a high flow shower valve and the plumber cut corners by using undersized pipes.
will it work as installed ? yes it will.
will you have a nice luxurious flow of water from the fixtures? i doubt it..

and, WHERE will these "larger sized" pipes come from, without possibly remodeling even more of the building?
