 washing machine install question
Author: havefun (Canada)

Hello Everyone,

Located in Ontario, Canada.

Had a washing machine relocate, prompted by a bad leak, new subfloor needed, etc. Since it was all apart, figured I'd make wife happy, and move the washer to the end wall. Had a plumber from a well established company come in to do it, since I didn't want to mess around with making the connection to the 3" drain. I'm handy around the house, but felt this was a little beyond me.

Stud space is 16" o.c..However, he ended up with the vertical 2" not close enough to the stud. This left him without enough space for the p-trap. So, the p-trap was installed backwards, and now I have what is in the attached picture. I questioned him on it, and he told me not to worry, it will work fine. He ran water directly from both the hot and cold feeds, fully open, down the washer drain for a 30-40 seconds each, no gurgles, everything seemed to work fine.

It's 2" inch pipe, the space between the trap inside wall and inside wall of the sanitary tee is about 3". The trap seal will be approx 6" deep.

I've done some googling, and it seems to be contrary to code, where it specifies the trap arm must be at least 2 pipe diameters. I'm concerned that he has essentially created a crown vent.

Also, not in the picture, is a lack of clean-out, which I didn't notice until they had left.

Is this going to cause me issues?

since there are no solids going down that pipe you should be OK.
you have an extra long standpipe so the deeper trap seal will not cause any backups.
there should be a cleanout.
it can be installed in the vent up higher than the top of the machine.
it won't be full size but it too should be adequate..

It'll be fine. I would use a metal stud plate to protect those water lines from a nail / screw as they pass thru that stud.

Yes, it's fine. Cleanout is a good idea. Nail plate is a great idea.
