Can I install kitchen sink without clips?
Author: Mb486 (NY)

We just purchased & had installed a granite countertop. Our cabinets are the original ones from 1952 so they are 32". We did have a 33" sink prior with our laminate countertop so I didn't think it would be a problem. They put the top in yesterday & the sink 33" fit. We went to install the sink today, first realizing there are clips. The clips do not fit with the granite. The lip sits to close to the granite. There's really no way to drill out any of the granite to make room. Is it ok to install the sink without the clips? Everything I've read said you really shouldn't but I'm getting desperate. I'm not sure if our old countertops can hold a cast iron sink which wouldn't need clips. Any help would be appreciated.

The purpose of the clips is to pull the sink down to the top. If the sink sets flat in the cut out without bowing in the middle, then you should be fine. Use a recommended sealent under the lip for water-tightness. Most all sinks installed in stone are undermounts, so yours is the exception.

Most cast iron sinks are heavy enough they don't need clips anyway, but stainless sinks do. I would carefully test fit the sink, and if everything looks good, use a high quality silicone to seal under it. If you have some large cardboard and someone to help wrangle it, flip the sink upside down onto cardboard and run a bead of silicone under the lip, then lift and flip the sink and lower it into place. If you don't have the ability to lift and flip it, set it into place with shims under the edge, and run a bead of silicone around the perimeter as best you can, then remove the shims to lower the sink into the silicone. Whichever method you use, smooth it with a wet finger and if you need to clean something up, it is best to let it dry, then use a flat razor blade to remove it, don't start smearing it around or you will kick yourself later. It is easier to remove a glob of silicone than it is to clean up a smear.

The contractor who measure said there was no way we could do an undercount but apparently a drop in isn't so easy either. Thank you for your assistance

I can't understand that, because at most, all they would have had to do was cut off part, or parts, of the cabinet top for clearance. Unless the sink was NOT an undercounter model which would be a different problem. Actually, maybe they should have mounted THAT sink before installing the countertops.

YOu have new countertops, so I assume you mean the old cabinets. Since the cabinets support the countertop and the countertop supports the sink it does NOT put any extra "pressure" on the cabinets. You can use a cast iron sink if you want to. In fact, it would probably look better than a "loose" stainless steel one.

American Standard Americast might be a good choice. They look like cast iron but are a lot lighter and are designed to be secured with silicon.
