I have have a P Pfister three-handle shower valve in my tiled wall. It is at least 20 years old. I am thinking about getting new handles to change the look of things, but I wonder if I'm putting lipstick on a pig? I don't have any leaks or problems, and I have replaced the seats and stems, but I don't want to spend money on handles only to discover that I need a new unit soon. How long can a brass mixing valve be expected to last? Pipes are copper. Our water is very hard.

If you want a new look now is the time to change everything, mixing valve and trim. 20yrs is a pretty good run for any brass rough body. I usually say anything after 10 yrs replace it.

Forever, if you do not damage the valve when you replace the stems. If I were fixing it for you, I would make it a "lifetime" valve so you would seldom have to replace the stems.

PP is a lower end valve....I wouldn't put anything into a 20 year old PP valve
replace it
get a nice 1 handle pressure balanced valve

PP is a very durable valve. I have worked on 50 year old valves making them as good as new. IF he wants to do a remodel, then a PB valve would be indicated. If he just wants to do an "upgrade" the PP will do that.

There is nothing wrong with an older PP. They are easy to work on and parts are widely available and inexpensive.

I used to be their #1 fan, but then the quality went down and I switched to Delta.

Your brass mixing valve should last a very, very long time-lifetime (if not damaged). Hard water is more likely to affect cartridge (if you have one) and wears it out earlier than in areas where water is not so hard. I just had to replace my cartridge after only 5 years. Hard water...

A 2 or 3 handle valve does not use a "cartridge", it uses a stem.
