Outside drain - how to prevent clogging
Author: nacarter (VA)

We have a drain that is an outside stairwell. It frequently gets clogged with debris and leaves even though we clean this area frequently (and we've had trouble with storm water seeping in under the door when this happens). I'm looking for a dome shaped raised cover that would still let water through and that leaves couldn't cover as easily to prevent this problem. Any ideas where to look? Any other ideas about how to keep this from happening?

Thanks.

If it doesn't have a catch basin, it will be tough to do much. If the runoff does not flow fast to the drain, I've had good luck with a piece of landscaping fabric. However that's for a drain that just gets trickles.

Much depends on the size of the drain hole and whether its recessed or surface mounted. There are several companies making cast iron, cast brass and plastic beehive strainers for just that application.

I've seen people use bird cages and crab pots with a brick on top to solve this problem. After trying many different store bought solutions, this is what ended up working for them.

My first post - hello all smiling smiley

I use a weatherproofed steel drain cover to protect an unrecessed exterior drain and it works very well. My yard is surrounded by leafy trees and it used to be a bit of a nightmare in autumn, but at least they don't block the drain anymore!

I can't point you at a place to buy I'm afraid (a friend who's handy with metal made it for me) but I've seen similair things in hardware stores. Basically a steel plate with a rim to hold it slightly off the ground and a slot for the pipe.

Good morning:

Where do I buy a beehive strainer suitable for stairwell drain. The drain is recessed and covered by an iron grate. The drain pipe's diameter is 3 inches. The iron grate's diameter is 6 inches and is flush with the stairwell floor. The grate is not a perfect circle. About 20% of its circumference is flat ... as in a wheel with a flat spot.

Thank you.

I have this exact same problem. This is the best site. I'm considering the bird cage suggestion as I need an easy way to remove the drain cover from time to time so thought that would be better than using one of those raised grated covers cause they probably be always in the way. Having ability to remove the cover when needed would be a big plus.

Thanks for posting and drawing one good suggestions.
