You might not be able to find a J-bend that will mate to your existing trap arm, best thing to do would be to replace both as a pair.

For best results, you're usually better off replacing the complete trap from the wall
stub-out to the tailpiece but there are several different trap designs and connections.

Here's one type:

Who drew that picture? The rubber gasket on the "J" bend's outlet goes under the "flange" on the wall bend, not above it.

Good eye hj.
According to the new and improved IPC, that type of trap is now legal to use, our code prior prohibited mechanical fittings after the trap seal.

nothing wrong with that type of trap. if that joint leaks it will be noticed and easily fixed since it is in an exposed area.

and again i say what is wrong other than a state that spends hundreds of millions and many years on a project for it to fall apart almost as soon as it is put in use doesnt allow them?

and what is their reasoning behind not allowing them ?

if they are concealed then i agree with them not being legal but other than that there is nothing wrong with them. i have yet to hear a good argument for not using them.

MA didn't spend hundreds of millions on a tunnel, they spent thousands of millions. 16 thousand million (16 billion) and not finished yet!
taxpayers in TX, CT and AZ all chipped in to help pay.

I believe it's because the slip nut gasket (after the trap seal) on a typical tubular trap can possibly
dry up/deteriorate and permit sewer gas to escape from the drainage system into the living space.

And before that would happen the joint would start leaking water and would be replaced or repaired. Then since that joint is typically either a brass ferrule or neoprene plastic, it wouldn't "dry up and deteriorate" anyway.

The only other comment is that I never connect the outlet slip nut directly to the pipe. I use a DeSanko/Marvel/Whateveryouwantcallit trap adapter, and the washer is a metal ferrule or a poly washer.

If that's the case, what would be a *logical explanation why not to have, (according to
some Plumbing codes) a mechanical fitting, (slip nut joint) downstream of the trap seal?
*Besides the fact that it makes it more difficult for DIY's to do their own repairs.

The official reason is that a rubber washer or "O" ring seal on the outlet can dry out and leak. The real reason is that strong union states/areas have that requirement to limit DIY installations and repairs, and make the initial installations a bit more expensive.
