Repairing Old American Standard Shower Faucet/Valve
Author: kman345

Hello,

I have what I assume is an original American Standard Shower Faucet/Valve in a house that is approx. 45 yrs. old. Water has been dripping out of the handle when it's turned off. See link to pictures of where I'm at. I can't figure out how to remove the valve stem, and if I do, don't know if it can be repaired or not. Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Show us the trim and handles. If that is an American Standard faucet, it is a lot older than 47 years.

Thanks for the quick response. See the additional pictures of the handle/trim piece that says American Standard.

In the photo below, it seems that the packing nut is missing, (see fine female threads around stem). If you do have the packing nut, wrap some valve stem packing material around the stem and push it into the gap and tighten the packing nut, the dripping should stop.

As far as removal of the stem it appears as though there are several flats milled into the outside of the barrel close to where it threads into the valve body.
