Looking for troubleshooting references (or advice) on self shutting faucets: water on too long, water on too short, won't shut off, etc.

Try tightening the valve assembly and check for high water pressure.

Sorry about this. I didn't read the thread topic very well and at 3 in the morning, I shouldn't expect to.

Either get the manufacturer name off of the faucet in question or take assembly to a plumbing supply warehouse that deals with commercial end products.

These valves have assemblies that over time dirt can cause problems along with the spring assemblies wearing out.

There are a few different types of metering faucets and an assortment of ways to adjust them.
Check the website of the manufacturer for downloading operating manuals.

Good Luck. *westchester plumber*

The best thing you can do is remove these type of faucets and go with a standard faucet. The self-closing faucets are pron to just a little dirt or sand and it will screw them up every time.

Self-Closing faucets vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Mechanically operated and guided by water pressure and springs to perform a necessary task, preserving water.
Usually, there are 2 types of self-closing faucets. Those with immediate closing upon release and those which fibulate slowly and gradually allow the water to shut off. This allows a good washing. The timing or metering is adjustable.
Many of the populated areas of this country code these types of faucets in to preserve and protect the potable water supply in commercial structures and schools.
Chicago Faucet, for example, makes 3 metering faucets. Klose-Self (spring-loaded), Niaad
(spring & water pressure) and MVP (water pressure). Each system requires different repairs and adjustments to affect a good shut-off.
Central Brass, Symmons, Bradley, American Standard are other companies which produce a series of metering devices.
Let us all know the brand and action.

Your best source would be the manufacturer's site for a operating/service manual for that faucet. There are too many different self closing faucets and they do not have "generic" methods of servicing them.

Most interesting. Please note - as is obvious, I am not a professional plumber, merely a handyman. The particular faucet in question, has 3 things on the plunge - "PUSH", "H" & "CENTRAL". The 1st is the function, 2nd the temp & I assume "CENTRAL" refers to manufacturer. The exact problem with this faucet is that the water won't stop running once the valve under the sink is opened. However, I have encountered other types of problems, such as varying times, excessively long times, etc., & I have to believe, different manufacturers because of different design. So - I have different problems with different manufacturers, but all with the same type of push-to-operate, self-shutting faucet. So therefore, I look for a trouble shooting reference.

I should have added another fact. I took the guts from the faucet, went to a plumbing supply house, purchased a new assembly, installed it, & the same thing occurred when the valve was opened. Then I removed the valve from the cold water side, installed it in the hot water side, & again the same thing occurred. So apparently, the problem is not the valve, but something in the line? I don't know where else to look.

 Central Brass Metering Stem
Author: Wheelchair (IL)

Yep, it appears from your description that you have a Central Brass Slow Close Stem.
These stems use a spring, but mainly water pressure to alot a given amount of water to pass thru the cartridge before it times off. This assembly is actually made up of 3 seperate sub-assemblies.
The handle assembly, its spring loaded
The cartridge (K-170) either hot or cold
The metering dashpod (XPF-170E),
with gasket (X170-P),
with felt washers (X170-J),
with Brass Dash Pod Washer (X170-H),
with Dash Pod Screw (X170-K),
and another gasket (X1028-Y)
These dashpods are adjustable at the brass screw. All the way in and you have compressed the felt pads. The felt pads allow air into the dashpod.
With the screw 1/2 way out, it allows more air to enter the dashpod and it should shut off much quicker.
Without the dashpod the cartridge would do a quick close without metering as the dashdop is the metering device.
If you provide your fax number I can fax you the Central Brass written details and instructions. I'm surprise that the place where you purchase the cartridge didn't want or offer to do it.
Best Wishes
