I replaced my main water shutoff which was the old screw in type with a ball shutoff...how long do these last before they have problems ?

Anything mechanical can wear over time, but from what I've seen ball valves will last much, much longer than gate and globe valves. The ball is made of stainless steel that is very tough to wear and I think they put a teflon-like coating in there to make the mating surfaces smooth and lower wear.

cant see it...its installed...I think it was chrome ??...im on city water

If the ball is chrome or chrome plated it will last a long time. And they don't get a lot of wear since you aren't turning them on and off many times a day like a kitchen sink faucet.

"depends on many factors and so impossible to give you an answer."

i say it depends on your water...in san jose at the schools we have proublums when contractors put in red and white or appollo valves.just dont work after a couple of years...my favorite is a brand called stockman,three times as expensive but i have turnd 40 year old valves that shut off easily...thanks,dan
