I had a Whirlpool 40 gal.gas water heater 3 years old, when I installed it I put brass nipples on it to avoid rust,It had a 9 yr warranty, since new it was flushed very 6 mo. and in Jan, tried to operate the pressure/temp valve and it would not work,it was replaced and recently it needs to be flushed 3 times in 30 days could the brass nipples cause the anode rod to fail or is it just a piece of ...t?

Why are you flushing it?

If it is not a rusty pipe in the connecting piping, then it is in the tank and is not preventable.

Now for the good part when called the Mfr. they said it was a water problem and suggested I purchased an aluminum style anode to correct the rust, well I didn't think that was right so I replaced the heater. The reason I asked about the nipples is when I took them out they were almost plugged and also the way the Mfr handled the problem.

If I had done the plumbing for you, I would have replaced the water heater under warranty, if it were the cause of the rust. BUt if that nipple was clogged with rust, then that was probably the source of the problem.

If the home has galvanized water pipes then the rust and other dark particle debris could be coming from them.

Three times in 30 days is way too much. You may have a tank that was not completely covered with glassed to prevent rust. Gas Water heaters normally have weld-olets welded onto the top of the tank and the nipples only go in so far leaving a gap between the nipple and the glassed portion of the tank which can rust. Did you remove the existing Anode and replace it with a new one? I would call the Manufacturer and explain your situation and make a claim. I have had good experiences with Bradford White on warranty coverage.
