Being a novice at plumbing issues, I have a question. I have a basement drain backing up. Initially I cleaned it out real well and got what appeared to be mud and toilet paper. It was draining afterwards when I poured water down it. Then later it backed up again. Only this time it appeared to be clear water, but the same toilet paper type substance. I've ran a snake about 12 feet into it without hitting anything. Any ideas would be appreciated. Trying to impress my girlfriend's grandmother.

You may have the basement drain cleaned for the first several feet, but could still have a blockage further down the line. If so, the water will eventually fill the pipe and backup, no matter how far down the line the blockage is. Are all other drains working ok? Is there a cleanout further down the line or even outside the house that you can snake from?
