My washroom sink pipe was leaking so my landlord sent the apartments handy-man over to install a new pipe. Now the water backs up in the sink and my landlord refuses to fix it. The water used to go down the drain immediately with no backing up whatsoever before the new pipe.

I know I'm knitpicking, but it's kind of annoying to have the water running for a minute and see the water backed up with toothpaste and other crap sitting on the top till I turn the tap off.

I suspect that he replaced the tubular P-trap under the sink. If so, I also suspect that one of two things happened, either part of the rotted J-bend is still in the pipe in the wall, or that he left the J-bend a bit long and it's restricting the flow. Either way it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to remove the trap, remove the obstruction and reinstall the trap.

The backup does not appear to be "immediate" so it is probably in the drain pipe rather than the pipe he replaced. Although replacing the pipe could have dislodged some debris causing the backup.

I agree with AJ. remove the tubular trap and snake as far as you can. Flush it good to see that your have solved the problem.
