I have tried tree cartriges to stop a dripping leak wiwthout success. The inside of the pipe looks pitted and scratched. Is there anything I can do to stop the leak, or do I have to change the incoming pipe so I Have a better surface for the cartridge. How about a bigger washer, more plumbers grease????

The surface of the opening must be smooth so the O-rings and other gaskets can do their job. If you have the older style, I forget the model number, I have used a 3/4" copper cleaning brush to clean out any calcium inside the valve. I realize that this is using a steel wire brush against brass, a softer metal and is not recommended by the manufacturer but have found it to do the job of allowing the valve not to leak by. Possibly the aggressiveness of using these steel brushes affects the outcome. If this were to not work then you should consider changing out the valve.

I wouldn't do it PlumberLoren....water can get around the o-ring if you make any type of scratch in the side wall.
