Replacing piston in an old style pre-1985 GEM flushometer
Author: tempn (AL)

Hi,

Am planning to replace a piston in an old style pre-1985 GEM flushometer. The flushometer I have looks like the one shown on the page 3 of the Flushometer Maintenance Guide, see PDF at [www.sloanplumbingparts.com] , see the REPAIR PARTS FOR OLD STYLE GEM FLUSHOMETERS (Pre-1985) section on page 3.

Here's what I would like to clarify:

1. How do I remove the #2 CP Cover (see the page 3 of the above pdf for item numbers). Will unscrewing the #1 CP cover screw allow to remove the cover? Or perhaps the #2 CP cover is screwed on directly onto the flushometer's body and unscrewing the #1 CP cover screw is unnecessary?

2. What do I need to do to remove #5 RB Inside cover? Is it screwed onto the flushometer's body or attached to the #2 CP cover or what?

Thanks

1. Unscrew CP 1
2. Lift off CP cover.
3. Unscrew RB inside cover.

That's what I want to be sure of. I've taken another look and I think I can see a threading under CP Cover #2, meaning that it's my impression that CP Cover #2 is screwed on directly onto the flushometer's body and unscrewing CP screw #1 won't do much good or may not even be necessary.

Thanks

Screw 1 must be removed before the cover can be lifted off. The cover must be lifted off before you can unscrew the RB inside cover. You can't reach or unscrew the inside cover until the CP cover is removed.

Is the Screw #1 the only thing that is holding the CP Cover #2 in place? My concern is that the CP Cover #2 also screwed onto the flushometer's body.

Thanks
