I have had a recurring problem with my master toilet backing up into my shower and have had a plumber snake the drain twice (the length of the house) which temporarily solves the problem.
House was built in 2005. Attic above MBR, finished basement below. Vent stack for MBR above on high pitched roof with difficult access. Indoor cleanout vent is on the other side of house from MBR and plumber showed me that was clear after snaking drain last time. (This part of the basement is unfinished and has access). Obviously, outdoor cleanout is on other side of house also but is below grade - can't find.
Before the toilet actually backs up I can hear gurgling after flushing toilet, occasionally using sink, and in toilet at random times. Once problem occurs, any water run in the MBR (toilet, sink, tub, shower) backs up into the shower. Occasionally it will slow drain throughout day/night and flush one more time...
All other plumbing inside works fine.
I called a different plumber today and his theory was that the stack vent was blocked and the reason the problem was resolved by snaking the drain (twice) is that by pulling up the toilet air is introduced and temporarily relieves the problem. He neither had a camera or had a way to climb onto the roof. His suggestion was to find someone to run a water hose down the stack, hopefully find a blockage, and cover with wire mesh to prevent reoccurrence. Or hire someone with a camera that can check both inside drain and vent/stack.
Does this seem like a logical next step? It seems to me that this is something that hasn't even been considered yet and makes some sense.
Also wonder if the indoor MBR plumbing is just getting blocked due to angle(s) before it hits the main line (as all other plumbing in the house works fine). Not sure if air bubbles in toilet/sink etc makes sense with this scenario though.
Any suggestion greatly appreciated.

The rooftop vents can cause a problem but it isn't typically the problem as often as something else going on. If someone can get up there and clean out the plumbing air vent pipe that would eliminate it as a possibility. I'd consider having a camera sent down the toilet drain in MBR and inspect that part of the house drain piping. When the plumber removed the clog last time did he say how far down the drain line or the approx location of the clog was?

i'm not sure of how many times a potential blocked vent was blamed for a stoppage on this site. probably in the many hundreds.. i can't remember any that were the actual cause of the stoppage.
as my friend from AZ has said.. "you need a better plumber"..

The master bathroom branch of your system is clogging and causing the stoppage. Why it is clogging we can't tell you. If it is a long run with minimal pitch, that may be the reason. Or it may be the pipe material, etc.
