 Clawfoot tub drain
Author: Lewbert (KY)

I've had a plumber come and take a look at a drain kit I ordered for an old clawfoot tub. I screwed up and didn't do my homework, the drain itself coming from the floor is 1 3/8" and the drain kit is 1 1/2". The plumber said he would need an adapter and the one time I spoke with him he said he had looked all over the state and hadn't been able to find anything that would work.

My question is: is there not a simple solution I'm missing? Could I not make up the difference with a washer and slip joint?

Replacing the whole drain is a solid option and one I wish I had done before I put up drywall on ceiling below bathroom. Hindsight and all.

it's been a while but i think i used a kitchen tailpiece rubber washer in the 1 1/2 slip nut. the inside diameter is 1 3/8.
despite the dimensions given here, this is what i used.
drop the slip nut over the pipe and with a dab of grease, this will slide over the 1 3/8 tailpiece

you may drain FROM 1 3/8 into 1 1/2

you may NOT drain from 1 1/2 INTO 1 3/8

According to my opinion, you are getting confused because of wrong guidelines of your plumber. I think, you should try any professional expert that have a good experience. I am sure, he will help you much better.
