P-trap water smells like rotten eggs
Author: sum (FL)

I took apart a PVC p-trap for a kitchen sink and the inside of the white PVC pipe is coated pitch black. The water inside the p-trap as I emptied it smells like rotten eggs.

That's not normal is it? Some sort of nasty bacteria infestation? I filled a 5 gallon bucket with water and bleach and tossed the parts in it.

Yeah I'd say it's fairly normal. The internal surfaces of sewer pipes and traps are not normally sparkly clean or have a pleasant fragrance.
