Water coming out of kitchen faucet smells like rotten eggs
Author: Tiff (VA)

Hello Plbg community,
I need help with determining the cause of the foul smelling water coming from my kitchen faucet. No other faucet in the house has this issue. The smell goes away after the water has been running for a few minutes. I have verified that it is indeed the water that smells (as opposed to just the garbage disposal smelling bad --- I verified this by steaming some carrots using the water from the sink, and the carrots smelled like the water after cooking). Thinking it might be the faucet itself that was somehow harboring bacteria, I screwed off the faucet head and soaked it in bleach overnight. That prevented the smell for about a week, but then it was back.

Could the problem be a faucet head that grows bacteria or reacts oddly with the water? Could it be the hoses coming from the water supply? I'd greatly appreciate any ideas or help!! Thank you in advance!

Replaced the hot water heater recently?

The faucet supply lines were my first thought. Sometimes the rubber inside them begins to break down and cause an odor.

Yes, that's the first thing I would do. Let us know if that fixes it.

By chance is it the hot water only that smells like sulpher? If so this can be associated with the water heater that has used up the Node Rod. We experienced this with some 80 gallon water heaters at a Nuke Power Plant. However this may not be your cause of problem.
