Water Meter Low Flow/Triangle Sprocket Moves Back and forth
Author: bulldogman3 (TN)

Ok guys and gals....got a quick question for you....A neighbor has a water leak and we checked his meter the other day...his leak detector was spinning...anyway, his repairs are being made tomorrow....Now, my question about my water meter....as usual...I had to begin to worry about mine, so I opened my water meter and checked my little sprocket shaped indicator...mine was not moving at all.....after watching it for awhile, I noticed it begin to jiggle clockwise, then counter clockwise..it did this a few times, then stopped....check it again later...no movement that I could tell....fast forward to this morning....I checked it again....it would move clockwise a little bit for time or two, then stopped for good...I came back an hour later, no movement other than a teeny tiny jiggle counter clockwise, then a teeny tiny bit clockwise....then stopped for good.... The sprocket has NOT been making any full spins...I have checked it off and on all day..the numbers have stayed the same...I have washed my hands a couple of times since check it...the red needle on the main reading has moved minimal, if any. I live on a big hill...I have not noticed any change in my water bill amounts or any drastic change on my usage amounts...I compared bills with my father who lives closeby and our bills are pretty much the same, within a few cents...My neighbor told me that the reason my leak detector sprocket would go back and forth was due to water pressure changes and I also looked it up online with other water utility companies and it said that counter clockwise and clockwise movement was due to water pressure in the main water lines and other neighbors water usage....anyway, I have checked everywhere for leaks and cannot find any....we had a main water line replaced from the meter a few years ago that was leaking...So, I don't think there could be a leak there....is slight movement back and forth in a leak sprocket/triangle on a water meter normal water pressure from the main lines the cause of this? Again, there is NO continuous spinning of the leak sprocket detector hand....I appreciate any help you might have! Thanks! Let me also add..I have checked my toilets..no water running, no turning off/refilling....No icemaker on fridge....

When the pressure increases, some water goes into your system to equalize the pressure, which makes the dial 'tick' forward. When the pressure drops, then the excess pressure in your system flows backwards, again to equalize the pressures, which makes the dial 'tick' backwards'. All is well with your system.
