Have a 1.5" drain line with a wye connection. The wye is PVC with two cast iron pipes connected to each end but the branch is also PVC. The entire wye is wrapped in some black color cloth fabric. What is the purpose of this fabric - if its a standard practice in DWV plumbing?

Maybe an attempt to keep it from leaking ? Definitely not standard practice.

Maybe for noise reduction?

not for noise reduction because the pipe is buried about 6" below a concrete slab. May be a poor attempt to keep from leaking?

I've seen epoxy-fiberglass wrapped on exposed joints and elbows, but nothing for buried pipes. Is the pipe actually leaking?
Best Wishes
