Helping a buddy re-build a basement shower he paid some Yahoos to install 5 years ago. They installed a fiberglass stall they jammed in to a space that was just a bit too small. It leaked from day one. They caulked it several times before they stopped returning calls. Now the drywall was all soggy and some of the studs were moldy.

Anyway, I asked if they wanted to change out the shower mixer that was in good shape and they said no as they were not thrilled with redoing what they already paid for.

The shower pan is poured and the tiling is done. Double checking the fit of the mixer escutcheon I looked closely at the brand name - Pegasus. Rats!!

I would have insisted they changed it out had I known. The thing has soap scum on it so I gave it to his wife to soak before reinstalling it.

I should have known these clowns would use he cheapest junk. It was set for a thin wall installation but still worked behind backerboard and tile so we didn't have to move it.

Just wondering if I should change it out now or worry about it when it fails. My understanding is they are pretty much disposable when they fail.

There is pretty good access in a panel behind the wall. It will be a bit of a pain in the arse because the copper is all drilled tight in the 2x4 framing.

Are the mixer/escutcheon sizes pretty much standard? I left a bit of an overhang of the tile over the mixer hole as the plastic shield is a bit recessed.

Just wondering how much trouble I will have retrofitting a new mixer latter?

Personally I would replace it with either a Delta or Moen.

Its a Big Box import, made in a foreign country, by foreigners, using foreign parts. Who knows for absolutely sure what will be available in 5 years. Safe bet, with better odds is something more American Made. Moen, Delta or Kohler.
