Moen bathroom sink...stopper and ring corroded. Do I need to replace entire drain assembly?

Might as well, since you have to take the old one out to replace the ring.

Thanks...and do I need to find a Moen drain assembly, or are they generic?

they are generic to a point.
the lift rod is probably a different diameter so will have to change it as well.
sometimes they come in the package and sometimes not.
otherwise they are all the same.

The diameter of the lift rod is immaterial because it goes into the intermediary link which has a oversize hole and a clamping screw. The finish color is the only consideration for the new one.

FYI, Moen will replace just the stopper "drain plug" and ring "seat", don't need to replace whole assembly.

When you say "Moen will replace", do you mean Moen will send you those parts?
When you were advised to replace the whole assembly, that was because the "ring seat" (drain flange) is not available separately at a store and you have to buy the whole assembly. So you end up with all the new parts and there is no point in reusing any of the old parts.

Yes, Moen will send drain plug and seat, brushed nickel...
I get your point about replacing the whole assembly, but this will be much easier for an old geezer!

To replace it you will have to almost the same amount of work as to repair it.
