 gas dryer venting code
Author: sbmmm (FL)

What is the current code for venting a gas dryer? Specifically, I have a gas dryer with a vent designed to go through the exterior wall, but it would exhaust about 6" above the concrete slab of the open carport (in Arizona). Is that too close to the ground? Does code require it be higher? I could open the 2"x6" exterior wall from the inside and direct it up and out at a higher penetration with two 90* elbows if absolutely necessary...

I wasn't aware of such a code for discharging steam, n lint.

there is no "code" for it, other than what the manufacturer recommends.

If I recall, it's a max 25' exhaust run and you subtract 5' for every 90* turn in the exhaust path. Use only smooth metal ductwork, no flex hose and especially no plastic ducting. Exhaust cannot have a screen on it, and should not exhaust within 4' of a window.

No specific height requirements but you don't want the vent to be blocked by a pile of snow, leaves, etc., which may or may not be an issue depending on where you are in AZ. Since it's under a carport and so low to the ground, you don't want it in a place where something could be set in front of it to block it. More common sense than a code per se.

Interesting. In some dry areas, people vent their dryers into their houses for warmth and humidity. Not smart in my book but with a lint screen it works for some.....

yeah, not a gas dryer..
if someone did choose to do that, a carbon monoxide detector is an absolute necessity.
