Replacing Old Push Pull Shower Faucet, Seek Replacement Advice
Author: PlmbgNewb (PA)

I recently just moved into my first home. The shower faucet is a push pull handle, I believe it is a Moen. It is difficult to pull out and push in. I've done research and understand that this happens over time with calcium buildup and it is a fairly easy fix. Remove the old stem and replace it or clean out the old one. I understand how to do both and feel very confident that this is something I can do myself. With that said, the current handle is plastic and I'd ideally like to replace this with a more modern style.

I've done some research and have found some Moen handles I'd be interested in purchasing in its place. I know that I can't get just any faucet in place of the push pull style. In fact, to my understanding anything other than the push pull style will require a plumber to change the setup to accommodate the handle(s) I select.

My questions are:

Are the Moen "Moentrol" single handle faucets the style I should get to replace my push pull faucet? And is there a conversion kit I can purchase to change from the push pull style to a single handle turn style (I believe the Posi-Temp style).

Thank you for your help.

Thanks for your input, but I'm interested in updating the current one to a new one.

I know that my local hardware store has the replacements available. But the current one is old, discolored and grimy. I'm questioning whether a "Moentrol" faucet can replace the older push pull faucet handle?

if you are asking "do I need to change the whole valve body?".. the answer is yes.

I know what I need to do to fix the problem with my current shower faucet.

But I think I asked the actual questions under, "Here are my questions:" in my original post.

I would really like to replace the ENTIRE faucet (handle included) with a newer one. The plastic is old and discolored and I'd like to install a brushed nickel handle. Will a "Moentrol" Moen faucet be compatible with this older push pull faucet currently installed?

I don't want this dingy plastic handle anymore. I want an entirely new faucet assembly.

Moentrol is the ONLY the only thing that will work. You cannot "adapt/convert" it to the Positemp model.
