water auto feed to boiler question
Author: NickinNJ (NJ)

Hi
I have a steam boiler in a rental house I own with a water auto feed (which can of course be bypassed if needed).

Right now the water feed is hooked up to the cold water supply.
I was thinking of hooking it up to the hot water supply like I have on another boiler so there is less chance of damage to the boiler when letting water in.

My questions are:
1....what are people's thoughts on auto feeds
2....Is it OK to run hot water through an auto feed?

Thanks
Nick

Unless the boiler is already out of water, in which case hot water would be just as bad as cold, there is no benefit.

Agreed.........One other note.....Makeup water to a steam boiler should be absolutely minimal. If fresh water is added to the boiler frequently, it will rot the boiler out, in short order.

Fresh water feeds.... contain oxygen and oxygen can cause corrosion in a steam or hot water heating system.
