Cast Iron Sewer Line Corrosion
Author: EquineMom (CO) How long does it take for a cast iron sewer line to corrode? Is it a matter of weeks or is it something that takes years? If a pipe is starting to corrode, could activity on the basement floor cause it to fail more quickly? Such as installing carpet or other construction near where the pipe is located?

Author: packy (MA) the answer depends on how thick the pipe is and how well the tar coating adheres to it. cast iron pipe comes in thicknesses from service weight (thin) to extra heavy (thick). your looking at anywhere from 30 years to 75 or more years. cast pipe is meant to be buried so how could a rug harm it ??
