 Black/Gray Water
Author: co2mc (MN)

Hi

I'm in a rental and some work was done to the bathroom sink. It looks like the j-trap was replaced. When we first turned the sink back on the water ran black/purple and then finally clear. Now it is pretty much clear but sometimes black/gray... especially if we turn the shut off valve. Why is this? Is it safe to drink? Our landlord is no help.

Thanks

That's a common occurrence when an older angle stop is closed and opened. It's from the rubber seals that are deteriorating. I would just allow the water to run until clear.

It would also help to temporarily remove the aerator if one is present.

When in doubt, take a clean sample to your county health department and they will test it free.

Best Wishes

Working on the drain would have nothing to do with changes in the water supply.
