 Drain line leak
Author: rn74 (SC)

Hello everyone. I was under my house yesterday while the shower was in use and saw a great deal of water falling right through the floor. I'm thinking, based on covering the drain in the shower that the leak is in the drain line and not the shower. I went to investigate but it looks like the drain line is covered by, I guess it's the subfloor.

I also noticed that when the toilet is flushed there is a gurgling noise right under the shower.

Can I cut the wood between the joists to see what's going on? It's right under the shower so coming from above wouldn't be easy. Any idea how large of a blade I could use without damaging what's above any more than it already is?

Thanks!

usually, the shower drain attaches to the pan or the base and drops straight thru the floor into a trap. so there is only a very short piece of straight pipe that you can not see.
try dumping a bucket of water down the drain just to eliminate the possibility of a leak in the shower valve piping.
if i were cutting thru the floor from below, i would use an oscillating tool.
