I just replaced an stiff Moen shower cartridge 1220 with a new one. I bought new Moen clips and used the one that looked like the one that I removed (it broke in trying to insert it for the new cartridge). My problem is that the new clip does not easily drop down between the ears. I bang it, push it, etc. I used tool that fit in the hole of the clip and HAMMERED IT. Shouldn't it more or less slide down?

It should, if the cartridge is positioned correctly. Make sure it is completely inserted into the valve body, and that it is oriented correctly.

Turn the cartridge 90 degrees and then install the clip. The clip goes outside the ears not inside.

That would explain it but the cartridge seems to be in all the way and the clip, through slot still, still will not clear the ears.

If he put that into his Moen faucet, it is no wonder the clip does not work.
