How do you take apart this moen faucet?
Author: brae09 (OR)

We have a kitchen faucet that is leaking. It looks like it is a Moen.

There are no model or serial numbers that I can see.

I pried off the plastic (blue and red) cover, inside the hole there is a stem in the middle. I don't know what tool I need to take apart the faucet to get to the cartridge.

Thank you for your help.

It's a Moen Torrance. Turn off the water supply for the faucet. You need an Allen wrench to remove the handle screw. Remove the screw, lift the handle off, remove the dome and then unscrew the retaining nut. The cartridge will then pull out of the faucet body. Contact Moen for warranty replacement part.

Thanks! It looks like the cartridge has a part number 1255.

I've taken it apart to this point. The retainer clip was pulled. The cartridge didn't seem to want to come out when I pulled it with pliers. Is there anything else I need to remove?

Also it seems that the two little black plastic pieces used to be one piece and got broken into two.

This is probably an older Moen Camerist and uses Cartridge 1225?

Thanks.

The replacement cartridge usually includes this small plastic tool. Place the tool over the stem, so it's tangs engage with the cartridge. Use a wrench to rotate the tool and cartridge, to break loose the O-rings from the faucet body. Remove the tool and then pull the cartridge out.

Thanks a lot, Steve. That makes sense since I see a plastic piece on top of the cartridge that seems to hold it down. I was hoping to get the cartridge out before ordering the replacement to be sure I get the right one. But it looks like a 1225 cartridge. I will talk to Moen next.

I was able to turn the cartridge with a pair of needle-nose pliers by engaging the two prongs with the "tangs" on the cartridge and then pulled it out. On the body of Cartridge it has "MOEN" in the middle, "8-6" below it and "12801" above it.

Here's a link for exploded parts view(scroll down to bottom page). That black plastic piece is available with the "Handle Adapter Kit" #100429.
