I have a crack in a pipe under the house, my landlord came and turned the water off, then called and had us shut off the water heater from the breaker after. Now the water heater heater is making very loud toilet/water cooler type noises. It was silent before turning it off from the breaker. My initial thought is that the water heater is draining. Does anyone know if that's correct or is it some thing else? Should I worry about the noise?

Open a hot faucet and see if there's still some pressure. If the cold water feed valve isn't shutting off 100%, you might hear the water flowing through the valve.

Make sure the heater is off at panel. Then connect the female end of a garden hose to the valve on the bottom of your heater. Route hose to nearest accessible drain. Open the valve until the heater is completly drained. You have eliminated half of the process in two steps.
