A 40 gal gas water heater makes loud banking noise when the sprinklers (9 gpm) are turned on. It really loud and long if the the burner is on too. The is no expansion tank. Only make the noise with the sprinklers. Have Neptune T10 meter (5/8 x 3/4) with no pressure regulatory 70 psi static. 42 psi dynamic

Some noise issues require an onsite inspection and evaluation, for sound. It could be air in the system or something more serious. Why not consider professional intervention.. a licensed plumber.

It is caused by the cold water pressure drop, which makes the superheated water inside the rust nodes in the water heater "condense" creating mini explosions. The majority of them are on the center flue which is why there is more sound if the burner is operating.

The next question is how to get rid of the noises? I have tried flushing out the 4 year old WH. I was thinking of a expansion tank on the cold water side to slow down the sudden drop in pressure.

Will the present condition cause any damage? It makes noise when heating without sudden changes in water pressure.
