 Hot water issue
Author: Big O (OH)

Hello
I have lived at this house for 7 almost 8 years and never had this issue before and need help. Here within the last couple months while taking a shower my hot water gets really hot even after having it adjusted just right. I've checked my heating elements and they are good and both settings are at 125...any advice will help. Thank you

Well, since I do NOT believe anyone's "testing" except my own, I question whether the elements ARE 'okay' and the thermostats are working properly. There are some conditions in the heater that could cause those symptoms, but they are very rare.

Each element has a thermostat to switch it on and off. Thermostats can lose their heat sensing calibration and alter the water temperature. Yours may be doing that. If you only notice a difference in the shower and not elsewhere, the shower faucet valve may need to be checked.

My shower valve is two separate knobs it's not a mixer/one knob unit. And when it comes to the thermostat wouldn't it be to hot at all times not just while the water is running it gets hotter?.

I doubt it is the thermostat since a storage electric water heater cannot keep up with the water demand of a shower, unless you have the water off for a really long time while you lather.

Perhaps your hot and cold shower valves are not maintaining their settings - either the cold water flow is decreasing or the hot water flow is increasing while you shower.

as my friend from MD noted. check the water elsewhere in the house. turn the shower on and when it gets really too hot check a few faucets.

It's possible that a tank flapper is leaking and when the toilet refills you get less cold water, increasing the temperature of your shower water.

Two-family house? New neighbors, or ones that are now home when you're home? I'm wondering if it's as simple as a neighbor flushing the toilet.

An electric heaer CANNOT "heat the water flowing through" it fast enough to make it hotter. The "hottest" water is already in the tank.

Using a thermometer, measure the hot water temperature first thing upon getting up in the morning before any hot water use ( place thermo. in glass under running hot water, then read after couple minutes). It should be within a few degrees of your thermostat setting.
