Got a quick question......I have a shower faucet that seems to be working just fine.....
it was a tub converted into a shower back in 2009....hot and cold knobs with a diverter on the tub faucet spout....
there is just a bit of normal dripping after the shower is turned off..then the dripping completely stops..nothing, really out of the ordinary......
mostly, water dripping back down from the shower head thru the diverter for a minute or two...but what I have just noticed and it's probably been like this for years.....
when I turn on the water, thus opening the valves, I have noticed that the knobs themselves seem a bit shaky or loose like......
I'm assuming it's where the stems have been opened up allowing the water to run....you understand? when the water is turned off, there is no play at all, perfectly tight....
I checked other faucets at my fathers house and most of his did the same thing when the water was turned on....a bit shaky...he told me that it was completely normal...kind of like someone having a butterchurn...
pushing the stick down deep and it being tight, then raising the stick and the stick becomes loose at the top.......My handles are new, I just replaced them.....
I put the old ones back on and they did the same....I'm probably worrying over nothing......
Like I said...the water turns off completely, a few drips afterwards, then stops.......
I'm just wanting to know if it's normal for faucet stems/handles to have a little bit of play when the water is turned on......
thank you so much!!

Did you tighten the packing nuts while the faucet stems were partially opened ? That will usually take most of the wobble out of it. The threads on the stem are fairly coarse and they won't be real tight when in the open position.

hey man! thanks a bunch! I had the faucet professionally installed back in 2009....I put some new knobs on the other day and noticed the little bit of movement or "looseness" in the handle when in the open position....I put the old knobs back on and they did the same thing....they have probably always been that way, I just failed to notice it.....as far as the packing nut tightened in the open position, I have no idea....the pro guy did all that back during the remodel.....what you are saying makes sense about the threads being course and not being tight when in the open position.....My dad told me it was nothing to worry about....He said it was normal......I guess I just notice too many things or try to find something wrong...Like I said, most of dads faucets had the little bit of a wobble in them, too when they are in the open position or "on" position....I appreciate you all so much! You have been a big help!

hey there, ole buddy! thanks for your response....I think it is a Kohler brand......not sure...the other board member responded, too! Apparently, it must be a normal thing for the little bit of wobble in a stem when it is in the open position....I had really never paid any attention......Anyway, if you have anything to add, please feel free! I appreciate everyone's help!

O rings and packing glands are suppose to support the stem and not allow it to wiggle. Most handles fit on splines, unless the stems are tapered, so they don't wiggle.
Not sure why you are being told that wiggle is ok.
