 Toilet Fill valve replacement
Author: sepurdy (WY)

I have a toilet that has been running on and off for about a year. Now it's running constantly and we're trying to fix it. I've determined it's probably the fill valve. The toilet has a fill valve that I've never worked with before - it's a Fill Pro anti siphon valve that sits an inch or two above the bottom of the tank. It's similar to this product: [www.amazon.com]
There is no float like a typical fill valve. From my research, it seems like these are prone to failure, especially with hard water (which we have). They're also not carried at my local hardware stores. So, my question: would it be an issue if I replaced the Fill Pro valve with a more standard universal fill valve? Any tips or suggestions for doing so? I haven't been able to find many how-to videos on the Fill Pro type valve, so any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I think the style valve you have is no longer made since it is not an anti-siphon valve. Remove it and install the Fluidmaster 400 valve and you're good to go.

Lowes carries them, but in my opinion they should ONLY be used for cattle water tanks and fountains, (which is what mine is used for).

Years ago Fluidmaster became the standard in home toilets. Because they work. They don't need repairs, and adjustments, you just replace them when they break. They are easy to install. Unscrew old, and screw in new into the hole at the bottom of the tank.

Unless your toilet is highly unusual, they should work fine and are sold everywhere.

I assume you already replaced the flapper. That in combination with the chain is usually what's causing the flapper to stay a little open and cause running (i.e. never filling up fully and stopping).

I'm not a plumber. I'm a home DIYer.
