So I know S traps are outlawed pretty much everywhere, but when I had a plumber come in to repair/rework all the drains in my house (we added a bathroom, and reconfigured 2 more) he stubbed out 2 sink drains through the floor. Meaning an S trap is the only way to plumb the fixtures. The one sink shares a drain with the toilet before getting vented, and the kitchen sink runs about 12' of 2" pipe before hitting the vent. I got concerned and asked how this was going to pass inspection. He goes,"see what the inspector says, we'll change it if he wants". Anyway the inspector comes through and passes the work with flying colors. Did I just have a cool inspector or is this work correct? The two potential problems I saw were the S traps and the toilet getting wet vented being upstream of a sink.

Delco PA if it helps.

Also all the fixtures work great, no issues.

might be a case where is an AAV (Air Admittance Valve/Studor vent) is needed.

Went to a home the other day with an S trap in kitchen and the home owner said she never smelled any sewer gases coming from a dry trap. So I'm wondering if a consistently primed S trap in reality is a true problem?

yeah I haven't had a problem with gasses/dry trap. Maybe water volume coming from a sink isn't enough to siphon the trap...I'll dump a 5 gallon bucket down the sink and see if I can break the trap seal

my house has 3 kitchens and 4.5 baths. every sink is an "S" trap and every tub is a drum trap.. it was owned by and renovated by a plumber in the 50's. i have no issues whatsoever..

Do you have a house trap. It is vented on the inlet side and you get almost no sewer gas.

The first problem is that YOU are not a plumber, so we do not know if you would recognize a vent if you saw one, and that may be why the inspector did not have a problem with it. Even the most incompetant inspector should recognize, and reject an "S" trap.

Install tee with a.a.v on top.though s traps are supposed to be illegal. It will work. Unless that sink is supposed to be venting the toilet.then a.a.v
