I woke up this morning to no hot water and was very frustrated as I have hot water and pressure problems all the time. Although this time the water pressure was fine but the hot water was freezing and didn't seem to be heating up at all. I went outside to check the water heater and found this.
The plastic cover was covering it but only loosely and seemed to be broken when I moved it.
Can someone help? Maybe just explain what happened? I know it's less of a plumbing problem but I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks

looks to me like you have a blocked flue pipe. also seems as though it has been like this for quite a while..
it was not an explosion but you are lucky you didn't die from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Replace the water heater now, with a new one. You did not mention to say how old it was......

Make sure the flue is clean before you put in the new WH or the same thing may happen again.
