Hey guys I am hoping I can get some help! I noticed about a month ago my master toilet was filling up with scalding hot water. I got around to calling several plumbers and none had an idea why, other than cartridges. He ended up replacing 3 cartridges in my house and 120 dollars later I still have the issue. Plumber said he did not have time to see why, I assume he just had no knowleadge even though he is a licensed plumber for over 20 years.
This is what I have done so far!
I have read a lot and checked mixing valves I can't seem to find any, unless they are inside the walls?
Plumber has switched all my shower cartridges.
I have turned off all the hot water lines at all faucets, and washer.
All this and I still get hot water. The weirdest thing is that if I shut up the water heater the toilet gets no water at all, as if a hot line was directly plumbed? I have owned this house for 2 years, and I am pretty sure I would have noticed this scalding hot water, specially in the winter. Any idea what this can be? I have a little jacuzzi tub that I have not checked, but it has separate hot and cold faucet. Also must mention at sink with hot water off undersink I will get luke warm water on cold setting after it runs for a bit so I believe it's definately mixing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have another plumber coming out today...THANKS!!!

Time is money to a licensed plumber. You can be your own detective by tracing the pipes as best as you can. Try turning your water heater to vacation status, to lower the water temp. Looking for any area in your house where hot n cold waters are blended. Are your pipes passing thru a hot attic roof? Check valves? It will take lots of time, but you will find the source, in time.
Best Wishes

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have no attic, and only exposed piping is under sinks! Everything else is hidden. So water blends at all showers, and I replace all cartridges. Also at sinks, I shut hot water off, and in kitcken, I also shut hot water off. I have not seen any valves any where. I don't mind paying, I have another plumber coming today but it would be the third a d they charge and not find issue! It's frustrating. I live in a city where everyone is a handy man. So I ended up calling a bigger company, hopefully it helps.

have the plumber look for a recirculating line at the water heater.

If you turn the water supply to the heater off and the toilet's water stops running, you have pretty much determined the problem. THe toilet IS connected to the hot water side. I have had people with this problem who NEVER knew about it until I told them.

So definately since I turn water heater valve off and toilet gets 0 water it means it has a hot line?
I can see that being since the only reason I noticed it its because toilet has been flushing it self for some reason several times a day and i guess it has time for hot water to come up now, and before since it never flushed it wasnt scalding hot. I will have plumber look at it today shower is next to it so hopefully it isnt too expensive.

If you flush it once in a while you were just using the "tempered" water inside the pipes. ONce you started having multiple flushes, possibly due to a leaking toilet, the hot water filled the pipes and then the toilet. It will be as expennsive as cutting and patching the wall is in your area.
