We had a handyman install a new water heater on our mobile home. When I turn on the hot water it smells first like chemical fumes and a burning tar?? My husband can't smell it so I am perplexed.Note I have always been able to smell a gas leak in appliances. Are we in danger from this?

if you only smell gas when you turn on the hot water then you do not have a gas leak. but you most likely have a problem with the gas flue. you ARE in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning if this is the case..
keep windows open so you are well ventilated until you can get this checked out.

Yeah, handyman , mobile home, and fumes are all red flags that you need to get things checked out by a qualified person sooner rather than later.

Is the smell from the water or near the heater?

If you contact your gas supplier they can test your setup for safety. They may charge you is there is an issue.
