Firestoping PEX tubing thru Fire rated wall
Author: bobalou (NJ)

Hello guys/gals
I installed several pex tubing lines thru a 2x10 joist that enters the utility closet by drilling 1" holes in the 2x10. The wall I drilled thru is a 2hr fire rated wall and now the inspector wants details on how we are going to firestop those pex lines coming thru the wall before we sheetrock. I don't have much experience with rated walls. Any suggestions are appreciated.

from a site..
"How do firestops work?
A: The fill and/or cover the annular space around pipes penetrating walls and floors.
Most firestops contain materials that intumesce, (expand) in the presence of heat.
This action seals the penetration if heat softens the pipe."

obviously, you sleeve the pex with a special sleeve that expands when it gets very hot and fills the hole..

There's one local inspector that make us use copper piping when passing thru a fire rated wall. I just use a couple of sweat female pex adapters on a short piece of tubing.

That has been my experience also, metallic pipes in or through a fire wall.
