black rusty water from gas pipe?
Author: erichman (WA)

I mistakenly used a section of black (gas?) pipe when I put in a new tub/shower system in a 1940s house with lots of old piping. I used the pipe because it was handy. Now each time I open the tap to the tub, I get a couple seconds of blackish/brown water. I don't recall seeing this color water before replacing the old system with this new one. Is there a way to get rid of this without tearing into the wall again to replace the pipe? HELP?

As soon as you said "black pipe" and "water" in the same sentence you answered your own question. Black pipe will ALWAYS rust when water goes through it.

It will never get better with time. It needs to be removed and replaced with copper or pex depending upon the application.

Or galvanized if the rest of the system is steel piping.
