 battery in sink in france
Author: france (IL)

Hello, I dropped a AA battery from my toothbrush down the sink. The only reason the drain cover was removed is because I was going to unclog the drain tonight with a type of drano. The sink is only a bit clogged (all the water drains out, but I can tell it is draining slower than before) so I wanted to take care of this before it gets worse. Then I dropped the battery in. I have read about the trap that should have caught the battery. However, I live in an apartment in France, and there seems to be no access to the drain or anything for me to open. My question: How dangerous is this? I really do not want to call a plumber.... I will probably stay in this apartment at least 6 more months... Can I just leave it? Drano would probably react badly with the battery Thanks in advance

Is this a single unit or a building of many units? Does the building have an assigned repair person that can be called to remove the battery? The would know how to remove the trap assembly.

Do Not Use Acid Based Drain Cleaners !

Thank-you for your response. There are 10 apartments in the building, some rented and some owned.

I opened a drawer (there are 3 very deep drawers) under the bathroom sink, and with a flashlight I was able to see pipes. The drawers, however, are securely attached. I guess I could try to remove the drawers and open the trap. But I have never done anything like that before and I do not have any tools.

I will contact the real estate company who rented to me. They have a fix it person. When I moved in, the kitchen sink, which is attached to the washing machine, was totally clogged (big mess, washing machine couldn't drain so it flooded through the kitchen sink). This same fix it person told me to use the French equivalence of Drano to clear the kitchen sink. So, his help may not be the best. I will call tomorrow, Monday.

I am assuming that everything will be ok until this plumber/fix-it guy comes here? It might take a week (things are slow here in France especially during summer holiday). While he is here, I will have him fix other things (old apartment...).
