XYZ's production line does not differentiate between wholesale and retail models. There is only one grade of brass, only one grade of cartridge and only one grade of warranty coverage–the best. While the numbering system for XYZ's wholesale distributors and retail distributors may vary and subtle installation and trim differences may exist. These may include, but are not limited to, packaging, threaded or slip-fit style tub spouts and metallic or non-metallic drain assemblies. The quality and limited lifetime warranty against leaks, drips, materials, and workmanship remain the same for all of our products.

the key 'honest' part is

..., but are not limited to, ...
anecdotal: I just spent 2 hours getting a 'top brand' sink strainer purchased through HD online to seal because it was an 'old style' which had been discontinued and recalled and replaced by the 'clamp type nut'.
I was doing a favor for my 93 year old neighbor - what a bloody (knuckles) nightmare for a $35 strainer assembly.
When I called the 'top brand' they offered to send the replacement parts, and apologized that it still had been sold by HD.
L also had the obsolete one.
ALL local plumbing suppliers (the three major ones) only carried the replacement type.
Never, ever, will I enter HD or L again. If I can not get it elsewhere, I do not need it at all.
Except, of course, to buy, use, and then return tools.

you used putty as opposed to 100% silicone seal?

I used FRESH linseed oil 'plumber's putty' from oatey.
I greased the threads and plastic friction washer (or anti friction washer, to be precise).
I used the proper 'dumbell' holdback tool across the strainer cross.
I had to tighten virtually to the point of stripping the nut threads.
I have installed many from the major brand but never before one purchased via HD.
The point was that HD still sold a product which had been redesigned/discontinued (probably for this very reason).
The sink, if purchased at the plumbing supply, would have been supplied with (priced separately) a duostrainer.
I REFUSE to glue strainers. PERIOD After 40 years in plumbing, if a strainer leaks when I install it, it is either defective or junk to start with. I WILL NOT GLUE TWO NON PRESSURIZED METAL PIECES TO CREATE A "SEAL".
Live and learn.

i used to have that type problem before switching to silicone caulk. never ever, ever have had a leak since. yes, some of the drains are plastic and can not be made up as tight as good old brass. but silicone will make them leak proof.
